rejecting God

Luke 7:29-30
All the people, even the tax collectors, when they heard Jesus’ words, acknowledged that God’s way was right, because they had been baptized by John. 30 But the Pharisees and the experts in the law rejected God’s purpose for themselves, because they had not been baptized by John.

John's baptism was about repentance (see Luke 3). Those who had been baptised by John had recognised their sin and repented, and were now listening to Jesus. The Pharisees, who hadn't acknowledged their need to repent, and so hadn't been baptised by John, now rejected Jesus and rejected "God's purpose for themselves". We can not come to Jesus without repentance. If we do not acknowledge our sin and repent, we are rejecting God's way. Repentance is not a one-time thing, it is a daily occurance for a Christian! If we think we've cleaned ourselves up and are no longer doing anything wrong, we are cutting ourselves off from Jesus.

Stop comparing yourself to others and thinking you're not that bad. Acknowledge the selfishness in your own heart. Repent again and rejoice in God's gift of forgiveness that rests entirely on Jesus life, death and resurrection, not on you.
