homework?

The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul;
the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple;
the precepts of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart;
the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes;
the fear of the LORD is clean, enduring forever;
the rules of the LORD are true, and righteous altogether.
More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold;
sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb.

(Psalm 19:7-10 ESV)

God's word revives the soul, rejoices the heart, is better than gold and sweeter than honey. So why do see it as homework? A chore that we know is probably good for us but find difficult to find time for. That doesn't sound like the same book David is describing!

If the Bible is a textbook or encyclopedia about how we should live, then reading it is like homework or research. But if the Bible is the true story about who God is and what He has done, if it is the primary way that God has chosen to speak to us, then that changes everything.

Feeling guilty? All the world can offer is telling you to try and ignore it. God’s word can show you why you are guilty and what the solution is. You can read about the Israelites rebelling time and time again and a God dealing with guilty people in love. You can read of David crying out in guilt for God not to cast him away. You can read Paul describing in detail that we are all guilty but because the only non guilty one took our place there is no more condemnation. That's what revives and rejoices the heart!

Feeling crushed by rejection
? Read about a God who is not only close to you but knows what it is like to be rejected and despised and crushed. Read about how he is coming back to make all things new and wipe away every tear. That’s what is better than gold or honey!
