we need more than bread

John 6:35
Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.

Often we are looking to Jesus for what he can do for us rather than who he is. We are asking him for bread but not seeking him as the bread of life. We look elsewhere for satisfaction and then, when we don’t find it, we just think we need more of that thing. Bread will not truly satisfy. Money or possessions will not truly satisfy. A wife, husband, girlfriend, boyfriend or a different partner to the one you're with will not truly satisfy. Respect from you colleagues, approval from your family or praise from friends will not truly satisfy. Only Jesus can satisfy.

Often our prayer lives are dominated by asking God for more of the things that wont satisfy! There is nothing wrong with praying for a job, family, or bread. Jesus tells us to pray for "our daily bread". But if that's all we are looking for, we will still remain hungry. We don't need stuff from Jesus, we need Jesus. We don't just need bread, we need the bread of life.

“Jesus did not come into the world mainly to give bread, but to be bread. He did not come to be an ever-ready bellhop for our bellies, but to be the all-satisfying bread for our souls” John Piper
