follow the leader

The church is a gospel centered community on mission. How should this affect the leadership in a church?

The leaders of the church community should be identified not primarily by their skills or gifting but by their love of the gospel - the good news about who God is and what He has done. The leaders of any Christian community should be those who see themselves as the chief of sinners, repent often, and are constantly in awe of God’s grace on display in the gospel.

Leaders should be part of the community, not outside of it telling people what to do. Any community needs leadership but the leader(s) also needs community, because every Christian needs to live in community with other believers.

Leaders are to equip the church for mission. Every Christian should be on mission, not just the “professionals”. However, one of the best ways for leaders to encourage mission is to have a missional attitude themselves.
