Genesis Eight

Never again will I curse the ground because of humans, even though every inclination of the human heart is evil from childhood. And never again will I destroy all living creatures, as I have done.Genesis 8:21

God saved Noah and his family, not because they were good, but because He was gracious. His amazing promise to not wipe everyone out again is not based on our ability to get it right this time (our inclination is selfish from childhood) but on His merciful character.

God has saved me through the death and resurrection of Jesus, not because I was good but because He is gracious. I now have the amazing promises that I am forgiven, adopted into his family, safe in his hand, heading to eternity with him. Those promises are still not dependant on my performance, because if they were, I would all lose them. They are based on his mercy and love, which are never failing and never ending

I understand the theory of my forgiveness being a gift that I have not earned. But my practice of returning to self reliance for my 'felt' relationship with Jesus shows how quickly I forget. I need grace everyday. Good news: I have not exhausted the supply of His grace.
