Genesis Thirty Four

Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, ‘You have brought trouble on me by making me obnoxious to the Canaanites and Perizzites, the people living in this land. We are few in number, and if they join forces against me and attack me, I and my household will be destroyed.’ But they replied, ‘Should he have treated our sister like a prostitute?’Genesis 34:30-31

Dinah, Jacob's daughter is raped. Jacob does nothing. Simeon and Levi kill all the men of the village. Sin is everywhere in this chapter - lust, violence, apathy, selfishness, revenge, murder. The only innocent person in this chapter is Dinah who suffers the sickening effects of other people's sin.

The real world is a sinful place. People sin against each other, and are sinned against. This includes God's people.

Our hope is not that we can improve and stop doing this because human history just keeps accumulating evidence for the sinfulness of the world. Our only hope is someone to come and deal with the problem of sin for ever.
