Genesis Thirty Two

Then the man said, ‘Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome.Genesis 32:38

The naming of the nation of Israel provides God's people with a constant reminder of this event - Jacob wrestling with God. Their name as God's people is not about the absence of struggle but about struggling with God and prevailing - making it out of the other side.

We often expect God to make things go right for us (from our point of view). Struggle and perseverance are part of being one of God's people.

My expectations of life as a Christian should include struggle (because of my sin) but prevailing through those struggles (because my perseverance depends on his strength, not mine)
