Genesis Eleven

Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves; otherwise we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth.”Genesis 11:4

The people try to build a tower to make a name for themselves and for their own security. As a result, God confuses their languages and scatters them.

I can take normal things, even good things, and corrupt them by doing them in my own name - trying to look after myself and my own reputation. If God causes that to go wrong for me, that is His grace. The best thing for me is to realise the mirage of self-reliance.

I can work hard and do a good job to the glory of God or to make a name for myself. I can plan for the future finding security in God's faithfulness or in my own strategy. One of those options is a fortress, the other is a tower that can't support it's own weight.
