Genesis Forty Six

‘I am God, the God of your father,’ he said. ‘Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for I will make you into a great nation there. I will go down to Egypt with you, and I will surely bring you back again.Genesis 46:3-4

God's promised Abraham that He would make his descendants into a great nation, in a land, under his blessing. The nation bit is beginning to take shape but here they are going down into somebody else's land. God promises that he will bring them out of Egypt, but that will not occur until after Jacob (and Joseph) are dead. Jacob is looking forward, beyond his own life, to the fulfilment of God's promises.

I have a very short term view that is limited to my lifetime at most. When I think about God's promises being fulfilled, I think about right here right now.

Right now is not the timescale God works in. God's kingdom has broken through but is not fully consummated. I should expect to see evidence of God's blessing around me but I shouldn't be surprised when not everything in the world drips with grace. One day it will.
