Hebrews One - A Better Prophet, Priest and King

In the Old Testament, God worked through prophets, priests and kings to reveal himself to people. The prophets spoke God's word to the people, the priests and their duties reminded the people of their sin and God's grace and the kings represented the authority of God as the ultimate ruler. This was all great news, what a privilege that God reveals himself to people in the first place! But they were all shadows at best, a dim reflection.

Jesus is THE Prophet - THE Word of God, the exact representation of God, who radiates His glory. We are not left wondering what God is like. He is like Jesus!

Jesus is The Priest - We are impure, He is pure. How can a dirty thing make itself clean? We are just pushing the dirt around. We need an external purification agent - and we have got one. Jesus! This did not just get us back to square one to make a better stab at it next time. Jesus sits in heaven because the job is completed. Sin has been dealt with once and for all. It is finished.

Jesus is The King - He created and sustains all things. He is sustaining the atoms in my body right now. That's why I am more dependant on his word than on bread, because without his word my digestive system can't do anything with the bread! All things belong to Him. All things. All my things. Me. All of it belongs to him, it is his possession.

In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.Hebrews 1:1-4
